HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR NEXT MOVE

moving tips stated clearly

Never underestimate the value of good planning

As Benjamin Franklin wisely said, ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.’

The dos and don’ts for an efficient move

We have a list of Dos and Don’ts to help you to curb costs and make the most of your move. These tips are informative but not only that, they serve to help you not make errors that others have made. Mistakes can be costly.

Quick tip

Did you know that moving in a small truck with 2 loads can sometimes be cheaper and faster than using a larger truck with one load?

If your two properties are under 5 km away from each other and you have a lot of unstackables (pot plants, lawnmowers, treadmills, bikes, canoes, BBQs etc.) then it is advisable to take two loads in our 20 m3 truck instead of a 40m3.

Why? Because we can do two quick floor loads and not have to spend an inordinate amount of time playing TETRIS with your goods to fit them under the legs of furniture and secure things safely.

Having 2 loads is a far more streamlined approach.

First load – furniture. Place these items unstacked in the truck and zip them around into the new property. Place them exactly where you want them, unhindered by boxes.

Second load, all the boxes, unstackables and small items. This means they can go directly to the rooms where they should, and the furniture is already in place.

The alternative is – lost time stacking and securing items, and everything arrives at once. Boxes are in the way of furniture as you bring them in, and have to be moved out of the way. How much easier would it be, to have the furniture in place and ready and bring the rest in after?

DOS AND DON'TS

Like most things in life, there are wrong and right ways to complete a move

Here, at Brisbane Removalists we have made use of our 12+ years of experience in the industry to collect as much information as we could. We enjoy helping people prepare and complete their moves. So following that principle we have put together some helpful information below.

Let’s call them the “Dos and Don’ts”

Move preparation

Do

Book in advance to ensure your move goes smoothly. It is difficult to get a last-minute space, especially during the busy season and on Fridays (and Mondays), which are typically settlement days.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Research to get the right company – check out the real Google reviews not pasted reviews on websites that cannot be linked back to Google.

Don’t

Do not base your research on paid for advertising which is always found at the top of the search page – rather refer to the organic listings that are based on under the map on the page. Many people can be caught out here. A lot of companies use the terms Brisbane and Removalists and if sometimes you think you are booking us – the genuine Brisbane Removalists – and you are not.

Do

Ask around – rely on friends and family networks who have moved recently – word of mouth is a reliable source.

Don’t

Do not choose a company on price alone rather on reputation. A reliable and efficient move is better than a cheap and nasty one which takes longer and causes you more stress.

Do

Be realistic. Factor in your access, what problem items you have, the weather and traffic into your move estimates. Poor access can be a move killer.

Don’t

Do not forget to book your lifts, check if there are time restrictions or rules in your apartment blocks. Most will not allow you to move before 9 or after 4 to allow for people getting to work and back. Some apartments do not allow Saturday moves!

Do

Book loading zone and lifts, check out height restrictions for the trucks, check if you have overhanging trees, rubbish day on a narrow street the day of your move, parking issues. narrow stairs, lifts or possible concerns re access such as school traffic before move day to be prepared.

Make sure you let us know!

Don’t

Do not forget to pack all loose items. A good removalist company will not take loose items as the risk of damage to the items and to other items when these move within the truck is too great. The time it takes to upload small items with multiple trips is not conducive to an efficient move and will cost you a lot more time and money.

Do

Let us know if you have a lot of unstackables items when you book. This means BBQs, pot plants, bikes, lawn mowers, treadmills, and canoes for example. These take up a lot of floor space and you cannot stack items on top of them. This will dictate what sized truck you will need.

Downsize donate or get rid of unnecessary items before you start packing. It is tempting to put them in the box rather than discard them in the moment.

Don’t

Don’t forget to tick off the following:

Change of internet provider. Change of addresses with all service providers – electricity, gas, rates, car licence, medicare, ATO, doctor, school, and work etc.

Do

Make sure you have thought out the logistics of large furniture and if it will fit in the new home, stairs or lifts. You do not wish to have to crane lift your item over a 5th floor balcony at the last minute. This can be very costly

Don’t

Don’t cancel last minute as you will leave the boys without work. They are the coalface of the business and do all the hard work. Cancelling last minute has a big impact on them given they are dependent on the daily income. Last minute cancellations mean we cannot refill a spot that we may have turned others down for and our boys are let down. We need a good 3-4 days’ notice.

Do

Read your meter!

Don’t

Don’t forget to go bed early the night before – moving is exhausting.

Packing

Do

Organise your packing material in advance. Best to start packing in advance and do a little every day. Start room by room with items that you know you will not need first. Place boxed items in one room – or where possible, in the garage – this will clear the house, ensure a quicker move when the team arrives and let you know you are making progress.

Get us to deliver your boxes in advance to your door.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Don’t

Don’t overload boxes – use small boxes for books for example. Heavy items in large boxes can break the seal of the tape and can be difficult to manoeuvre down stairs and sharp corners

Do

Label your boxes with colour coded stickers – orange for the kitchen, blue for your bedroom etc.  and print a colour page to pin to each room for easy and reliable delivery. This way, the right box will find its way into the right room every time. No excuses!

Don’t

Do not leave your drawers full. Weight can be detrimental on the structural integrity of your furniture items when moving. Filing cabinet runners will snap under the weight and pressure as can wood items.

Small and loose items can be damaged or damage other items with sustained movement if left to roll around inside the truck without being boxed.

Do

Label your boxes with fragile items clearly!  Especially glass, wine, marble etc.

Don’t

Do not pack flammable liquids, gas bottles, lighters or pressurized cans. We do not take these. Empty fuel and oil from mowers, or garden equipment.

Do

Fill in gaps in boxes with packing peanuts, scrunched up butcher paper, or sheets, towels etc.

Don’t

Makes sure sharp objects are properly packed so they do not pierce through boxes and cause injury to our teams.

Do

Keep a box full of essentials aside that you will have easy access to – especially with children.

Place your necessary documents, daily essentials and must haves here for easy access.  Label this as – DO NOT TAKE and take it in your car with you.

Don’t

Try to use proper double lined boxes over cheap supermarket quality ones. Cheap boxes collapse under the weight of other boxes and can cause a domino effect in the truck if one collapses as well as damage to your goods inside.

Do

Turn your fridge off and empty it 24 hours before the move and let it stand at least 6 hours before turning it back on at your new home. This allows the gases to settle.

Don’t

Do not forget to secure your washing machine with a stabiliser bolt found at the back of your machine. Drain all water from the hoses in advance if possible.

Do

Make sure that pot plants are not watered 2 days before the move and place the pot in a bin liner and tie it around the stem.

Don’t

Don’t forget that if you are moving interstate, you will need a special permit for taking plants over the border.

The move

Do

Look after your movers. Treat them with kindness and care. Get to know them a little. Being respected makes everyone on the team feel positive. Make sure they are able to take 5-minute pauses from time to time without making them feel pressured into always being on the move. It is a strenuous job and often in high heat here in Queensland. A few small breaks throughout the day for water and to give their muscles a break, will replenish their energy and will go a long way in keeping the boys at tempo.

Don’t

Do not stress your movers. They know what they are doing (if you have a reputable company). Let them go at the pace they need to ensure they pace themselves for the entire day and that they take the right precautions with your furniture and precious items. It is a stressful day for you, but they are there to make it better so enjoy them, their humour, their smiles and their work ethic and the day will go much faster.

Do

Help out where possible – bring boxes and items down to the bottom floor or take them to the truck. Make sure you are being safe.

Don’t

Do not get in the way of the movers, nor get in the truck. Do not allow children or pets to be in the way for health and safety issues. Do not carry heavy items or furniture – leave this to the experts.

Do

Take a break yourselves and focus on the excitement of a new home rather than on the potential stresses on the day.

Don’t

Do not make multiple trips with the car for weeks on end to take the little things if it means you are killing yourselves for no reason and what has taken you 2 weeks to move may have easily taken one load and 20 minutes for the boys.

Do

When the pickup is completed, go around the house and check with the team that they have collected everything. Check over the top of built ins, in drawer cavities – things slip behind.

When the drop off is completed at destination

check your furniture and boxes with the team to ensure you are happy and there is no damage.  If something is damaged, then get this noted on the day by ringing the office directly and writing a note of if on the invoice before signing off.  This is essential as there is always a clause of no responsibility if you come back 3 days later and say that we have damaged your TV or furniture. There is no way of confirming that this was us or if it was done after the move.

Don’t

Do not forget that we are not responsible for self-packed boxes unless we physically drop the box or there is damage to the box itself that was not there at uplift. Poor packing and poor packing material are often the cause of damage and for boxes to crumple when stacked.

I had a fantastic moving experience with Brisbane Removalists.
Our two movers were incredibly careful, efficient and very thoughtful throughout the whole process. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly, and they made the move completely stress-free for us.

Really appreciate the great service — highly recommended! 👍😊
Response from the owner:Hi Daniel, Happy we could help! 非常感谢您的精彩评价!能为您服务是我的荣幸。我非常期待再次造访上海。期待与您在上海再次相见!艾琳
From Eileen who took my call and turned an impossible situation around, to Vanderson and Sebastien who tirelessly moved us into a warehouse during a very humid day, I can not recommend a moving company more enthusiastically! They were so responsive and incredibly professional and a joy to have working in your space! Thank you so much for all your help yesterday! 💪
Response from the owner:So lovely of you to have taken the time to review us Jodie. Glad we could turn your last minute let down into a positive. We really do have superheroes and they are the backbone of our success. Thanks for giving them a shout out. I wish you all the best for your event and hope that it creates awesome memories for you. Congratulations! Eileen and the team.
Brisbane Removalists have been incredible in moving us today! We have had the best experience from our initial enquiry, booking, arriving on time with a courtesy call half an hour prior, and understanding multiple drop offs along the way.
Our family have been very happy with how easy this emotional move has been made for us. Thank you so much.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for taking the time to thank the team and their efforts. We appreciate the positive feedback. We are just really happy we could help out under the circumstances and make it easier for you. We wish you all the very best. Take care :) Eileen and the team.
We needed a last minute removalist and thankfully Brisbane Removalists were available! Eileen organised a truck for us ASAP, everything was friendly, fast and easy! Price was good too! The removalists handled everything with care. Thanks so much for helping us out!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much Lily for a lovely review. Glad our superheroes could help out and that we could get you moved last minute. We wish you all the very best in your new home. Take care, Eileen and the team
For a commercial office relocation I contacted several removalist for quotes and Eileen was the most helpful and professional, hands-down.

Eileen was great to work with especially as I'm based in another state and I was managing the Brisbane office relocation.

The removalists were on time and had the job completed swiftly and our company staff in attendance couldn't speak more highly of Brisbane Removalists.

Another tenant in the building we were vacating appreciated the review our staff gave of Brisbane Removalists and requested I forward the contact details for Eileen, which I promptly did - also forwarding to the Property Manager for the building for other tenants moving in or moving out.

Thanks to all of the crew at Brisbane Removalists.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for such a lovely review Mel. It was such a pleasure dealing with you throughout the process too. We appreciate the word of mouth...this is what we rely on the most - happy customers! I can't wait to find out more about that old safe! Hope our paths cross again. Eileen and the team.
Thank you so much. The boys were amazing. We were very happy with the way they handled our furniture and also their happy disposition. Thanks again.
Response from the owner:Hi Kari- Ann, thank you so much for the lovely review. I will let Vanderson and Thomas know that they did a great job. :) Thanks for using us for a second time. We love return customers. We wish you all the very best in your new home. Happy landing. Eileen and the office team.
We sold our home a week or so before we could move into our new apartment. After doing a fair amount of research and getting quotes, we decided on Brisbane Removalists.

We liked the idea and the costs saved by not double handling our belongings in the traditional way of loading a truck, unloading into storage, loading again then delivering to the new site.
Lots of extra hours required for that.

Vandersen and Jorge loaded our things in a very efficient and well considered way, they were courteous and respectful not just to us but ensuring there would be no damage to the house.

Stage two has not been done yet and that is unloading at our apartment building.
Brisbane Removalists claim to be experts in this type of moving and we look forward to the next step with the same minimal stresses for us.
Response from the owner:Hi Paul, thank you for your lovely review. I will let Jorge and Vanderson know that they were once again "Superstars" We thank you for referring us too. We live on word-of-mouth reviews - so much appreciated. We look forward to moving you into your new home Paul. We hope it will be a great offload too! See you soon. Eileen and the team.
10000/10 Breno and Joao were an absolutely incredible team together. They were on time, so friendly, and very good at their job. They took such care with all my items and were very cautious of my walls when delivering into my new house. Moving is usually such a stressful process but they made the day so exciting and fun, and I would 100% use them again!
Response from the owner:Another glowing review for Breno and Joao. They ARE true superheroes. Thank you for putting their names in lights and thanking them like this. Being a removalist is a tough job and we are very thankful that we have such great teams that do the hard slog day in and day out. We love it when they get the appreciation they are due. I am sure they had a great move with you too. It really makes a difference to their day being appreciated for their efforts. Enjoy your new home! Eileen and the team.
The best decision I made in my recent move was hiring Brisbane Removalists. From Eileen's first response to a request for a quote through to putting the last of my possessions into the storage unit, everyone that I dealt with was professional, helpful and friendly. Breno and Viktor arrived with huge smiles and their positive energy carried me through a really difficult day. They were careful with all items and checked with me before continuing if they were unsure of anything. Highly recommended!
Response from the owner:What a super review Aylex. You have certainly made our day. I will let Breno and Viktor know as they will be stoked too. We are really happy that we managed to take the stress away from you...see, moving can be fun!!! I am sure you had a great day with the team. They are true superheroes that not only wear invisible capes but also a wonderful attitude despite the heat and tough job it can sometimes be. Enjoy your new home Aylex and thanks for taking the time to review us. Eileen and Thomas.
Simply an awesome service. I researched many removal companies and was immediately impressed with the professionalism and guidance provided by Brisbane Removalists. They arrived on time and immediately commenced the move. They were very careful with our belongings going out of their way to ensure it was carefully protected and packed. Very reasonable rates and utterly reliable. I couldn't recommend them enough. Thank you!
Response from the owner:Hi Robert, oh how we love to hear this. :) Thank you for taking the time to write so much and for your appreciation of our service and our superheroes. They are awesome and we love to see that their efforts praised. I will let Vanderson and Javier know that they excelled once again. Take care and enjoy the sunsets and beach! Eileen and the team
Professional and capable staff at great prices
Response from the owner:Hi Michael, Thank you for your lovely review. I will let Sebastien and Sebastien know that you were happy with their efforts. Glad it all worked out - difficult for you not being there, but it all worked out as planned. :) Eileen and the team
These guys were excellent in every respect - They took the job on a Saturday at short notice and powered through a three-bed home in one go. The boys were so gentle with my stuff that I think they take better care of it than I do! Would definitely use these guys again.
Response from the owner:Hi Sam, thanks for the wonderful review. We love to hear this. I will let Vitor and Dave our superheroes know that they saved the day. We wish you all the very best in your new home and are glad we could get this sorted for you last minute. :)
The boys did an AMAZING job. It was a long and hot day and they powered through. We were moving into a new build with 2 flights of stairs and nothing was too much trouble for them. They moved the entire house so carefully and methodically and didn’t make a single scratch, all with big smiles on their faces (even though it was obvious the heat and stairs were getting to them!!). Thank you so much for their care and attention :) would absolutely recommend.
Response from the owner:Hi Melinda, thanks for the lovely review. I had to laugh when I read this and found out that it was Juan and Sebastien. I do not think I have ever seen Juan without a smile and Sebastien and he make a super team. I am glad that it was a great move despite the heat and appreciate you taking the time to thank the team as it is a tough job to do every day and we love to see it when clients appreciate this hard work. Enjoy your lovely new home. Well deserved I am sure after going through the building process. :)
Absolutely amazing service – best moving experience ever!

From start to finish, the team was professional, friendly, and incredibly efficient. They handled everything with so much care and made what’s usually a stressful day feel completely effortless. Communication was great, they arrived right on time, worked quickly, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was set up perfectly at the new place.

I’ve moved a few times before, but this was by far the smoothest and best experience I’ve ever had with a removalist company. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, hardworking movers who genuinely care about their customers!
Response from the owner:Hi and thank you for such a lovely review. I am unsure if it was us that moved you as I do not recognize your Google handle. I am hoping we did move you. It sounds like our superheroes but I would not like to steal a review that someone else deserved. Eileen and the team.
From the very first phone call to the final item being carried from truck to our new home was professional, friendly and efficient. Bren & Alejandro arrived right on time and all through the very long day they were happy, smiling, having fun and super efficient. I can highly recommend the Brisbane Removalists team they turned what can be an extremely stressful day into a pleasant surprise. Thank you all so much we are so grateful for a smooth day. 🩷
Response from the owner:Hi Karyn, thank you so much for your lovely review. I am sorry that I have just found this now as it usually pops into my email when I get one and this was not the case. Thank you for taking the time to show your appreciation of our services and our teams. They are fantastic and work so very hard. We love that they can take the stress away from you on a typically stressful day. I will let Breno and Alejandro know that you thought they were superheroes too. :) Eileen and Thomas.
Excellent team
Response from the owner:Hi Darryl, thank you for supporting our business and team. I have let Vanderson know. They had a great move with you too by the sounds of it despite it being a long day. I hope you enjoy your wonderful new home. Eileen and the team at BR
I couldn’t be happier with the team at Brisbane Removalists. From the start, the admin side was a dream to deal with — Eileen in particular deserves a shout-out for being so organised, attentive and endlessly patient with all my questions. On moving day, Breno and Alex made light work of the whole house, moving everything quickly, carefully, and with genuine good humour. The company’s communication, work ethic and pricing are hard to beat, and they turned what could have been a stressful experience into something surprisingly easy. I’d recommend them without hesitation.
Response from the owner:Thank you for moving with us again Bec, I am glad it went as smoothly as last time. I think your review may have overwritten your a previous one from way back when. We love moving you - you are such a lovely person. I will leave my last response below anyway. Merci ma belle! You were always a breath of fresh air and great to talk to on the phone. The highlight of my day! Your requests were absolutely not out of the ordinary - normal practice for us in the office - life is a moving tapestry in this business. I am so happy that we finally got you into your new home. I really hope that you love your new place and that you settle in well. I wish you all the very best Bec. Auf wiedersehen :)
Whoever has previously commented about late turn-up or no communication I couldn’t have had a more different experience. I was warned in advance that the time I chosen meant the previous job could be running late - they still turned up right on the dot. I had a piece of furniture which I know two people would really struggle and it would be dangerous. We worked around it. I needed an extra 2 hours and they accommodated it easily. Constant communication and updates the whole time! Plus the two guys they sent couldn’t have been friendlier and very skilled at how to avoid damage or hitting any walls etc.

Would absolutely recommend to anyone. Thanks team!
Response from the owner:Hi Peter. Thank you for the lovely review. I will let Erick know that you have given him a 5 stars. :) Second jobs are always dependent on the first finishing as planned but this is not always the case. Sometimes we can even arrive earlier than planned, but we always warn people of this. Glad that your job went smoothly and that our superheroes worked hard. You were also a wonderful client. The team had a lovely day. Enjoy your new home. Eileen
Vanderson & Sebastian B were amazing on our moving day, they were so friendly and so efficient. They made it feel like everything happened easily, even with an early morning start and evening finish. They got everything safely packed up, take a lot of care with wrapping our furniture, which we really appreciated. They unloaded everything in the new house to where it needed to be, and even assembled our furniture with their own tools! Thanks so much guys you are the best!
Response from the owner:Good morning Nikki, lovely to come into the office and see this. We are thrilled that you move was seamless and the day as stress-free as possible when it comes to moving! I will pass on your lovely comments to Vanderson and Sebastien - They love to know they have made a positive impact on your move. They are truly superheroes. They work tirelessly and always with a smile. We wish you all the very best in your new home and a fresh new start with lots of new places to explore. Eileen and the team at BR
Well ordered move across St Lucia, Brisbane.
Response from the owner:Hi John - thanks for the 5 star and taking the time to post this. Glad we could help and that all went as planned. Enjoy your new home. Eileen and the team.
