MOVING TIPS FROM BRISBANE REMOVALISTS

A well organised, itemised list of tasks to complete at moving time

Brisbane Removalists have been in the industry for over 12 years. We have seen it all and know all about the stress that moving house can be. That is why we have compiled a list of Moving Tips for you as a reminder of what not to forget!

HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR NEXT MOVE

We have created a video to give you some useful and helpful hints to make your next move faster, easier and even cheaper.

moving tips stated clearly

Never underestimate the value of good planning

As Benjamin Franklin wisely said, ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.’

The dos and don’ts for an efficient move

We have a list of Dos and Don’ts to help you to curb costs and make the most of your move. These tips are informative but not only that, they serve to help you not make errors that others have made. Mistakes can be costly.

Helpful moving tips image of an online checklist

Quick tip

Did you know that moving in a small truck with 2 loads can sometimes be cheaper and faster than using a larger truck with one load?

If your two properties are under 5 km away from each other and you have a lot of unstackables (pot plants, lawnmowers, treadmills, bikes, canoes, BBQs etc.) then it is advisable to take two loads in our 20 m3 truck instead of a 40m3.

Why? Because we can do two quick floor loads and not have to spend an inordinate amount of time playing TETRIS with your goods to fit them under the legs of furniture and secure things safely.

Having 2 loads is a far more streamlined approach.

First load – furniture. Place these items unstacked in the truck and zip them around into the new property. Place them exactly where you want them, unhindered by boxes.

Second load, all the boxes, unstackables and small items. This means they can go directly to the rooms where they should, and the furniture is already in place.

The alternative is – lost time stacking and securing items, and everything arrives at once. Boxes are in the way of furniture as you bring them in, and have to be moved out of the way. How much easier would it be, to have the furniture in place and ready and bring the rest in after?

DOS AND DON'TS

Like most things in life, there are wrong and right ways to complete a move

Here, at Brisbane Removalists we have made use of our 12+ years of experience in the industry to collect as much information as we could. We enjoy helping people prepare and complete their moves. So following that principle we have put together some helpful information below.

Let’s call them the “Dos and Don’ts”

Move preparation

Do

Book in advance to ensure your move goes smoothly. It is difficult to get a last-minute space, especially during the busy season and on Fridays (and Mondays), which are typically settlement days.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Research to get the right company – check out the real Google reviews not pasted reviews on websites that cannot be linked back to Google.

Don’t

Do not base your research on paid for advertising which is always found at the top of the search page – rather refer to the organic listings that are based on under the map on the page. Many people can be caught out here. A lot of companies use the terms Brisbane and Removalists and if sometimes you think you are booking us – the genuine Brisbane Removalists – and you are not.

Do

Ask around – rely on friends and family networks who have moved recently – word of mouth is a reliable source.

Don’t

Do not choose a company on price alone rather on reputation. A reliable and efficient move is better than a cheap and nasty one which takes longer and causes you more stress.

Do

Be realistic. Factor in your access, what problem items you have, the weather and traffic into your move estimates. Poor access can be a move killer.

Don’t

Do not forget to book your lifts, check if there are time restrictions or rules in your apartment blocks. Most will not allow you to move before 9 or after 4 to allow for people getting to work and back. Some apartments do not allow Saturday moves!

Do

Book loading zone and lifts, check out height restrictions for the trucks, check if you have overhanging trees, rubbish day on a narrow street the day of your move, parking issues. narrow stairs, lifts or possible concerns re access such as school traffic before move day to be prepared.

Make sure you let us know!

Don’t

Do not forget to pack all loose items. A good removalist company will not take loose items as the risk of damage to the items and to other items when these move within the truck is too great. The time it takes to upload small items with multiple trips is not conducive to an efficient move and will cost you a lot more time and money.

Do

Let us know if you have a lot of unstackables items when you book. This means BBQs, pot plants, bikes, lawn mowers, treadmills, and canoes for example. These take up a lot of floor space and you cannot stack items on top of them. This will dictate what sized truck you will need.

Downsize donate or get rid of unnecessary items before you start packing. It is tempting to put them in the box rather than discard them in the moment.

Don’t

Don’t forget to tick off the following:

Change of internet provider. Change of addresses with all service providers – electricity, gas, rates, car licence, medicare, ATO, doctor, school, and work etc.

Do

Make sure you have thought out the logistics of large furniture and if it will fit in the new home, stairs or lifts. You do not wish to have to crane lift your item over a 5th floor balcony at the last minute. This can be very costly

Don’t

Don’t cancel last minute as you will leave the boys without work. They are the coalface of the business and do all the hard work. Cancelling last minute has a big impact on them given they are dependent on the daily income. Last minute cancellations mean we cannot refill a spot that we may have turned others down for and our boys are let down. We need a good 3-4 days’ notice.

Do

Read your meter!

Don’t

Don’t forget to go bed early the night before – moving is exhausting.

Packing

Do

Organise your packing material in advance. Best to start packing in advance and do a little every day. Start room by room with items that you know you will not need first. Place boxed items in one room – or where possible, in the garage – this will clear the house, ensure a quicker move when the team arrives and let you know you are making progress.

Get us to deliver your boxes in advance to your door.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Don’t

Don’t overload boxes – use small boxes for books for example. Heavy items in large boxes can break the seal of the tape and can be difficult to manoeuvre down stairs and sharp corners

Do

Label your boxes with colour coded stickers – orange for the kitchen, blue for your bedroom etc.  and print a colour page to pin to each room for easy and reliable delivery. This way, the right box will find its way into the right room every time. No excuses!

Don’t

Do not leave your drawers full. Weight can be detrimental on the structural integrity of your furniture items when moving. Filing cabinet runners will snap under the weight and pressure as can wood items.

Small and loose items can be damaged or damage other items with sustained movement if left to roll around inside the truck without being boxed.

Do

Label your boxes with fragile items clearly!  Especially glass, wine, marble etc.

Don’t

Do not pack flammable liquids, gas bottles, lighters or pressurized cans. We do not take these. Empty fuel and oil from mowers, or garden equipment.

Do

Fill in gaps in boxes with packing peanuts, scrunched up butcher paper, or sheets, towels etc.

Don’t

Makes sure sharp objects are properly packed so they do not pierce through boxes and cause injury to our teams.

Do

Keep a box full of essentials aside that you will have easy access to – especially with children.

Place your necessary documents, daily essentials and must haves here for easy access.  Label this as – DO NOT TAKE and take it in your car with you.

Don’t

Try to use proper double lined boxes over cheap supermarket quality ones. Cheap boxes collapse under the weight of other boxes and can cause a domino effect in the truck if one collapses as well as damage to your goods inside.

Do

Turn your fridge off and empty it 24 hours before the move and let it stand at least 6 hours before turning it back on at your new home. This allows the gases to settle.

Don’t

Do not forget to secure your washing machine with a stabiliser bolt found at the back of your machine. Drain all water from the hoses in advance if possible.

Do

Make sure that pot plants are not watered 2 days before the move and place the pot in a bin liner and tie it around the stem.

Don’t

Don’t forget that if you are moving interstate, you will need a special permit for taking plants over the border.

The move

Do

Look after your movers. Treat them with kindness and care. Get to know them a little. Being respected makes everyone on the team feel positive. Make sure they are able to take 5-minute pauses from time to time without making them feel pressured into always being on the move. It is a strenuous job and often in high heat here in Queensland. A few small breaks throughout the day for water and to give their muscles a break, will replenish their energy and will go a long way in keeping the boys at tempo.

Don’t

Do not stress your movers. They know what they are doing (if you have a reputable company). Let them go at the pace they need to ensure they pace themselves for the entire day and that they take the right precautions with your furniture and precious items. It is a stressful day for you, but they are there to make it better so enjoy them, their humour, their smiles and their work ethic and the day will go much faster.

Do

Help out where possible – bring boxes and items down to the bottom floor or take them to the truck. Make sure you are being safe.

Don’t

Do not get in the way of the movers, nor get in the truck. Do not allow children or pets to be in the way for health and safety issues. Do not carry heavy items or furniture – leave this to the experts.

Do

Take a break yourselves and focus on the excitement of a new home rather than on the potential stresses on the day.

Don’t

Do not make multiple trips with the car for weeks on end to take the little things if it means you are killing yourselves for no reason and what has taken you 2 weeks to move may have easily taken one load and 20 minutes for the boys.

Do

When the pickup is completed, go around the house and check with the team that they have collected everything. Check over the top of built ins, in drawer cavities – things slip behind.

When the drop off is completed at destination

check your furniture and boxes with the team to ensure you are happy and there is no damage.  If something is damaged, then get this noted on the day by ringing the office directly and writing a note of if on the invoice before signing off.  This is essential as there is always a clause of no responsibility if you come back 3 days later and say that we have damaged your TV or furniture. There is no way of confirming that this was us or if it was done after the move.

Don’t

Do not forget that we are not responsible for self-packed boxes unless we physically drop the box or there is damage to the box itself that was not there at uplift. Poor packing and poor packing material are often the cause of damage and for boxes to crumple when stacked.

Brisbane Rremovalists transported the contents of our 3 bedroom house from the Country to Brisbane. They were exceptional and work diligently all day in the rain and did all that they could to protect our property. I could not be more pleased with their efforts and would highly recommend them.
Response from the owner:Good morning, Stephen! Thank you for such a glowing review. I will let Vanderson and Jorge know that you were super happy with them. I appreciate you taking the time to review us and our business. It is great to be able to give the team such feedback and appreciation. Rainy days and moving are not fun! I am glad you did more than just survive it. We wish you all the very best in your new home and surroundings. Take care, Eileen and the team.

The fact that this is the 5th time using Brisbane Removalists to help us move during renovations of various businesses speaks volumes for the quality of the service. Erick and Sebastian were great, and we'll be calling on BR in a few months' time to help us move into our new building. Thank you BR!
Response from the owner:HI Tania, we love return customers...thank you for the lovely review. I will let Erick and Seb know you gave them a 5-star review. They love to see their names in lights! They are a super team. We will talk soon by the looks of it! We will have to give you shares in the company soon! Eileen :)

Awesome company to deal with, moving is naturally stressful though everyone from the office to the removalist were spot on. Can’t recommend enough.
Response from the owner:Thanks Hamish...this is the best to start the day with! Thank you for taking the time to write this. We appreciate the recommendation. I will let the team (Vanderson, Jorge and Juan) know that you loved their work. Really happy you got direct entry. Made life easier for you. Enjoy your new home. I hope the unpacking is fun! Eileen

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved in our recent move for the outstanding service provided. From the very beginning, commencing with Antje and then through to Eileen, the entire process was handled professionally, efficiently, and with genuine care. Communication throughout was excellent, and it made what can often be a stressful experience feel seamless and well organised. A particularly special mention must go to the two young men Giovanni & Alex who carried out the actual move. They were absolutely amazing, arriving on time, working efficiently without wasting a moment, and maintaining a professional, polite, and respectful manner throughout the entire day. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they truly embodied everything one hopes for in a removalist team. Please pass on my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to them both. Thank you again for such an excellent experience. I very much look forward to working with you all again for the next move Part 2 of the move: Thank you again to the team at Brisbane Removalists, especially Gio and Alex, for another wonderful job with our move to Gympie. Again, the whole process and execution was seamless; a job extremely well done. This was the second move in ten days that we entrusted to Brisbane Removalists, and once again the service was exceptional from start to finish. Gio and Alex were absolutely fantastic — professional, courteous, hardworking and incredibly efficient. Nothing was too much trouble, and they handled everything with great care and respect. Moving is stressful, but your team made it easy and worry-free, and that is very much appreciated. It is a credit to the culture you have created within your business. Please pass on our sincere thanks to Gio and Alex. They represented Brisbane Removalists brilliantly, and we would not hesitate to recommend your company to anyone looking for a reliable and professional removalist service. Thank you once again. It has been an absolute pleasure dealing with you.
Response from the owner:Hi John, thank you for this wonderful review. We really appreciate that you took the time to leave us a review. I am sure it is the last thing anyone feels like doing after a move to be honest, so it is even more special to us when someone takes the time to do this. I have let Gio and Alex know that they have their names in lights! They are fantastic and true superheroes. We are thrilled it went to well. We look forward to part 2! See you soon. Eileen and the team.

Response from the owner:Hi Brooke. Thank you for this lovely review. Glad we could help out. Love to hear that we made you feel that you could rely on us. We have been doing this a very long time, and we do our very best to keep everyone sane on move day!! In your case it was 2 days! I will let Vanderson, Javier and Jorge know that they were true superheroes! Enjoy your new home. Eileen

If I could give more stars, I would have. This company was great and got us out of a real bind. On the morning of our move, a Removalist we'd booked, cancelled on us. We were in a panic and didn't know what to do. Finding Brisbane Removalists was the best thing. From my initial phone call where they said they have a team that will be able to do it. After moving some things around, we got a call saying they were on their way. The crew then called advising us of the ETA. The crew, Erick and Sebastián were amazing, they packed the truck with professional and ease. They told us their estimated time of arrival at the destination, and then called again to let us know when they were getting close. From there, they again unpacked the truck with great care and professionalism. The fact that they called letting us know any updates was great, as the one that cancelled wouldn't take our calls and would only deal by text message. They probably knew they would get a spray so didn't want to hear it. While Brisbane Removalists weren't our first choice, they should have been and if you are moving, look no further than this business. Thank you to all the team at Brisbane Removalists, you helped us immensely getting us out of a bind.
Response from the owner:Hi Chris, Thank you for such a glowing review. This is music to our ears. I am so glad we could help you out, when you had your back against the wall. It is really stressful. I have already sent this on to Antje who sorted this for you and to Seb and Erick our superheroes -they will be thrilled with such a wonderful testament. We do try and keep you updated and reassured especially when this has happened to you, so you have confidence that we will indeed turn up. We get that you will be super nervous. We NEVER not turn up to a job and if something does go wrong with a truck or there is an incident (and this can happen); we find a solution for you and keep you up to date. This is an essential part of the service we offer. We wish you all the best in your new home and hope your stress levels can return to normal. Happy landing and new adventures. Kind regards, Eileen and the team.

This company BRISBANE REMOVALISTS is reputable with great reviews but i wanted to warn others - Do NOT confuse this company with BRIS REMOVALISTS who are a complete rip off & scam & I believe they are hoping that people will confuse the 2 companies like me. They have numerous 1 star google reviews all with the same terrible experience, they are late, inexperienced, damage furniture, refuse to unload truck until you pay extiorional amounts (I had a 4.5hr job plus depot to depot travel of 1.5 hours each way & was forced to pay 13 hours plus double the actual km & made up danger fee). They were abusive on the phone & threatening. You have to pay to a personal bank account (S Taylford) not a company, don't accept credit cards, no ABN on any email (& website ABN is a company now deregistered Capital removals). I hope that the other business with similar name
Response from the owner:Hi Collette, it is really sad what happened to you and I hope you were able to recuperate some of this money through Fair Trading. Unfortunately, this is not a one-off event for us. We regularly get phone calls from very upset clients who have read our reviews, googled us to book and have ended up with the wrong company. It is very difficult to do anything about this as we cannot trademark our name as 'Brisbane' and 'Removalists' are too generic. We have also had bad reviews, not meant for us, for this same reason. It is very easy to confuse the two. I am hoping that you were able to get financial recourse from this job as we worked out that you were being charged $650/h in the end based on the hours taken, which is beyond belief. :( Eileen

Very impressed with this company. Head office is all over everything. The two separate teams we had were both excellent. Price very competitive.
Response from the owner:Hi Krystle, thank you for such a lovely shout out! This is great to hear. We do try very hard to do our best for everyone. Glad your move went really well. Enjoy your new home and surroundings. Thanks so much for taking the time to actually write this. I will let the teams know you appreciated them. Sorry we were not able to give you the same team back. Where do I start? Whats one of the most anxious times in life - moving...! Do you know whats not? Entrusting Brisbane Removalists with the move. I've moved (way too) many times in my life - and this was, by far, one of the "best" moves i have done. Alex and Giovanni were outstanding - from the moment they arrived, to when they drove off - nothing was an issue - all strategically taken care of - no bumps, no scratches, no dents nothing (a far sight better than previous where fridges were dented and washing machine trashed without so much as a sorry). What made it 100 times better was their attitude - laughter, fun and legit enjoyed themselves - even for a Saturday morning! Thank you Brisbane Removalists and a MASSIVE thank you Alex and Gio! Chris B
Response from the owner:What a gorgeous review Chris. It was lovely enough that you took the time to ring but to also write this has made my day and I am sure Alex and Gio will be thrilled. I am glad we could make your move full of fun and laughter. I hope you enjoy your new home and that you do not need to move again any time soon - we will of course be happy to help but who needs the stress of moving! Take care Chris - Eileen and the team. :)

I had a move yesterday 31/03/2026 , I had multiple addresses over half of Brisbane. I had 2 really nice people turned up Kevin and Jeff . They were on time , everything was great work. Jeff and Kevin were very polite, could not help me enough. Great work and for me over in short time in peak hour traffic. This is my second move with Brisbane Removalists, I will be using them again.
Response from the owner:Hi Greg, Thanks for the review. Kevin and Jeff will be very happy to see this. We will put them on your upcoming move if we can. Love to hear that the teams are the superheroes we hold them to be. It is a tough job to do day, in day out, but they always do it with a smile. We are very grateful to have such great young men on our teams. We will chat soon. Eileen

I thought the Brisbane Removalists did a great move . The company keeps in touch, first move in a long time I didn't have to chase the movers . The removalists that did the move were, on time, moved quickly and carefully. No breaks or losses , and where finished a lot sooner than I thought it would have taken.
Response from the owner:Good afternoon, Greg, thanks for the lovely review. Glad your small move went perfectly. Always tricky with risky objects but our superheroes did the job! Thanks for taking the time to review us. Eileen and the team.

Had a great experience with the guys from Bris Removalists (shout out to Juan & Sebastien!). They did a great job, were lovely guys & very friendly (& patient lol!). Love that a local Brissy business is being supported & when you call you're speaking to one of the owners (thanks for your help Eileen!). Wouldn't hesitate to use again, thanks BR!
Response from the owner:Hi Caz, love to hear that we made your move a breeze. Juan and Seb are wonderful and full of life.
