A well organised, itemised list of tasks to complete at moving time

Brisbane Removalists have been in the industry for over 12 years. We have seen it all and know all about the stress that moving house can be. That is why we have compiled a list of Moving Tips for you as a reminder of what not to forget!

HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR NEXT MOVE

We have created a video to give you some useful and helpful hints to make your next move faster, easier and even cheaper.

moving tips stated clearly

Never underestimate the value of good planning

As Benjamin Franklin wisely said, ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.’

The dos and don’ts for an efficient move

We have a list of Dos and Don’ts to help you to curb costs and make the most of your move. These tips are informative but not only that, they serve to help you not make errors that others have made. Mistakes can be costly.

Quick tip

Did you know that moving in a small truck with 2 loads can sometimes be cheaper and faster than using a larger truck with one load?

If your two properties are under 5 km away from each other and you have a lot of unstackables (pot plants, lawnmowers, treadmills, bikes, canoes, BBQs etc.) then it is advisable to take two loads in our 20 m3 truck instead of a 40m3.

Why? Because we can do two quick floor loads and not have to spend an inordinate amount of time playing TETRIS with your goods to fit them under the legs of furniture and secure things safely.

Having 2 loads is a far more streamlined approach.

First load – furniture. Place these items unstacked in the truck and zip them around into the new property. Place them exactly where you want them, unhindered by boxes.

Second load, all the boxes, unstackables and small items. This means they can go directly to the rooms where they should, and the furniture is already in place.

The alternative is – lost time stacking and securing items, and everything arrives at once. Boxes are in the way of furniture as you bring them in, and have to be moved out of the way. How much easier would it be, to have the furniture in place and ready and bring the rest in after?

DOS AND DON'TS

Like most things in life, there are wrong and right ways to complete a move

Here, at Brisbane Removalists we have made use of our 12+ years of experience in the industry to collect as much information as we could. We enjoy helping people prepare and complete their moves. So following that principle we have put together some helpful information below.

Let’s call them the “Dos and Don’ts”

Move preparation

Do

Book in advance to ensure your move goes smoothly. It is difficult to get a last-minute space, especially during the busy season and on Fridays (and Mondays), which are typically settlement days.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Research to get the right company – check out the real Google reviews not pasted reviews on websites that cannot be linked back to Google.

Don’t

Do not base your research on paid for advertising which is always found at the top of the search page – rather refer to the organic listings that are based on under the map on the page. Many people can be caught out here. A lot of companies use the terms Brisbane and Removalists and if sometimes you think you are booking us – the genuine Brisbane Removalists – and you are not.

Do

Ask around – rely on friends and family networks who have moved recently – word of mouth is a reliable source.

Don’t

Do not choose a company on price alone rather on reputation. A reliable and efficient move is better than a cheap and nasty one which takes longer and causes you more stress.

Do

Be realistic. Factor in your access, what problem items you have, the weather and traffic into your move estimates. Poor access can be a move killer.

Don’t

Do not forget to book your lifts, check if there are time restrictions or rules in your apartment blocks. Most will not allow you to move before 9 or after 4 to allow for people getting to work and back. Some apartments do not allow Saturday moves!

Do

Book loading zone and lifts, check out height restrictions for the trucks, check if you have overhanging trees, rubbish day on a narrow street the day of your move, parking issues. narrow stairs, lifts or possible concerns re access such as school traffic before move day to be prepared.

Make sure you let us know!

Don’t

Do not forget to pack all loose items. A good removalist company will not take loose items as the risk of damage to the items and to other items when these move within the truck is too great. The time it takes to upload small items with multiple trips is not conducive to an efficient move and will cost you a lot more time and money.

Do

Let us know if you have a lot of unstackables items when you book. This means BBQs, pot plants, bikes, lawn mowers, treadmills, and canoes for example. These take up a lot of floor space and you cannot stack items on top of them. This will dictate what sized truck you will need.

Downsize donate or get rid of unnecessary items before you start packing. It is tempting to put them in the box rather than discard them in the moment.

Don’t

Don’t forget to tick off the following:

Change of internet provider. Change of addresses with all service providers – electricity, gas, rates, car licence, medicare, ATO, doctor, school, and work etc.

Do

Make sure you have thought out the logistics of large furniture and if it will fit in the new home, stairs or lifts. You do not wish to have to crane lift your item over a 5th floor balcony at the last minute. This can be very costly

Don’t

Don’t cancel last minute as you will leave the boys without work. They are the coalface of the business and do all the hard work. Cancelling last minute has a big impact on them given they are dependent on the daily income. Last minute cancellations mean we cannot refill a spot that we may have turned others down for and our boys are let down. We need a good 3-4 days’ notice.

Do

Read your meter!

Don’t

Don’t forget to go bed early the night before – moving is exhausting.

Packing

Do

Organise your packing material in advance. Best to start packing in advance and do a little every day. Start room by room with items that you know you will not need first. Place boxed items in one room – or where possible, in the garage – this will clear the house, ensure a quicker move when the team arrives and let you know you are making progress.

Get us to deliver your boxes in advance to your door.

Don’t

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Do

Do not leave booking to the last minute – this means poor preparation, unfinished packing and no time to sort out important details. It can also mean not having the right-sized truck for your move or the right move time which can result in you being squeezed in somewhere on the day – this can be very disruptive if you have children and other responsibilities.

Don’t

Don’t overload boxes – use small boxes for books for example. Heavy items in large boxes can break the seal of the tape and can be difficult to manoeuvre down stairs and sharp corners

Do

Label your boxes with colour coded stickers – orange for the kitchen, blue for your bedroom etc.  and print a colour page to pin to each room for easy and reliable delivery. This way, the right box will find its way into the right room every time. No excuses!

Don’t

Do not leave your drawers full. Weight can be detrimental on the structural integrity of your furniture items when moving. Filing cabinet runners will snap under the weight and pressure as can wood items.

Small and loose items can be damaged or damage other items with sustained movement if left to roll around inside the truck without being boxed.

Do

Label your boxes with fragile items clearly!  Especially glass, wine, marble etc.

Don’t

Do not pack flammable liquids, gas bottles, lighters or pressurized cans. We do not take these. Empty fuel and oil from mowers, or garden equipment.

Do

Fill in gaps in boxes with packing peanuts, scrunched up butcher paper, or sheets, towels etc.

Don’t

Makes sure sharp objects are properly packed so they do not pierce through boxes and cause injury to our teams.

Do

Keep a box full of essentials aside that you will have easy access to – especially with children.

Place your necessary documents, daily essentials and must haves here for easy access.  Label this as – DO NOT TAKE and take it in your car with you.

Don’t

Try to use proper double lined boxes over cheap supermarket quality ones. Cheap boxes collapse under the weight of other boxes and can cause a domino effect in the truck if one collapses as well as damage to your goods inside.

Do

Turn your fridge off and empty it 24 hours before the move and let it stand at least 6 hours before turning it back on at your new home. This allows the gases to settle.

Don’t

Do not forget to secure your washing machine with a stabiliser bolt found at the back of your machine. Drain all water from the hoses in advance if possible.

Do

Make sure that pot plants are not watered 2 days before the move and place the pot in a bin liner and tie it around the stem.

Don’t

Don’t forget that if you are moving interstate, you will need a special permit for taking plants over the border.

The move

Do

Look after your movers. Treat them with kindness and care. Get to know them a little. Being respected makes everyone on the team feel positive. Make sure they are able to take 5-minute pauses from time to time without making them feel pressured into always being on the move. It is a strenuous job and often in high heat here in Queensland. A few small breaks throughout the day for water and to give their muscles a break, will replenish their energy and will go a long way in keeping the boys at tempo.

Don’t

Do not stress your movers. They know what they are doing (if you have a reputable company). Let them go at the pace they need to ensure they pace themselves for the entire day and that they take the right precautions with your furniture and precious items. It is a stressful day for you, but they are there to make it better so enjoy them, their humour, their smiles and their work ethic and the day will go much faster.

Do

Help out where possible – bring boxes and items down to the bottom floor or take them to the truck. Make sure you are being safe.

Don’t

Do not get in the way of the movers, nor get in the truck. Do not allow children or pets to be in the way for health and safety issues. Do not carry heavy items or furniture – leave this to the experts.

Do

Take a break yourselves and focus on the excitement of a new home rather than on the potential stresses on the day.

Don’t

Do not make multiple trips with the car for weeks on end to take the little things if it means you are killing yourselves for no reason and what has taken you 2 weeks to move may have easily taken one load and 20 minutes for the boys.

Do

When the pickup is completed, go around the house and check with the team that they have collected everything. Check over the top of built ins, in drawer cavities – things slip behind.

When the drop off is completed at destination

check your furniture and boxes with the team to ensure you are happy and there is no damage.  If something is damaged, then get this noted on the day by ringing the office directly and writing a note of if on the invoice before signing off.  This is essential as there is always a clause of no responsibility if you come back 3 days later and say that we have damaged your TV or furniture. There is no way of confirming that this was us or if it was done after the move.

Don’t

Do not forget that we are not responsible for self-packed boxes unless we physically drop the box or there is damage to the box itself that was not there at uplift. Poor packing and poor packing material are often the cause of damage and for boxes to crumple when stacked.

Great guys did an awesome job and didn't mess around. Great value and service. Highly recommend!
Response from the owner: Hi Mark, Thank you for the lovely review. Andres and Nicholas will be super happy to see this. We wish you all the very best in your new home. Happy it went well and we could take the sting out of moving for you! Happy landing! Eileen and the team.
Highly recommend the guys were great and on time and put in a massive days work!
Response from the owner: Thank you Ashlee for leaving this review. I will let Diego and Jonathan know. They will love to know that they made your move an easy one. We wish you all the very, very best in your new home. Happy landing! Eileen and the team.
The team did a great job with a high level of service from the initial quote right through to the move itself. Can definitely recommend.
Response from the owner: Thanks James for the great review. We love repeat customers. I believe this must be the 3rd time now. Happy that Guto and Henrique made your move so stress-free. I will pass this review onto them. They will be very happy to see this. I am also thrilled that you appreciate the service we offer and come back to us each time. We wish you all the best in your new place. Happy landing! Eileen and the team.
We engaged this company to move my furniture from Caboolture South to North Lakes. The uplift of furniture into a container went smoothly, the 2 gents handled the furniture with care and although it took a little longer than anticipated everything was packed neatly and the container was taken away and placed into storage for 7 days.On the day the furniture was delivered to our place in North Lakes, the unloading went smoothly and the 2 gents were very polite and helpful placing the items where we requested.Unfortunately French door fridge had dents in two of the large doors. We took photos and reported the damage immediately to Brisbane Removalists admin who took ownership of the damage and assured me they would have the fridge doors replaced. They kept me informed of progress and two weeks later we had new doors fitted to the fridge.I can highly recommend this company as from the outset they were very professional and upfront with costs etc. There was absolutely no hesitation in having my fridge repaired and went out of their way to ensure I was satisfied and happy with the outcome. We have used a few different removal companies and without any doubt, Brisbane Removalists are by far the most professional, helpful and honest company we have ever dealt with.Doug & Bev Whitehorn
Response from the owner: Thank you Doug for your lovely review. We are happy to accept errors - we are only human after all. Luckily these are few are far between. They are also learning curves for us, so that we do things better. I am very happy that despite your fridge being damaged, which was absolutely not what we wished for, that you were happy with the service and our follow up. I am glad that it is all sorted now and that you felt supported the entire way through the process. You were fantastic throughout the process too! We wish you all the very best in your new home Doug. It was truly a pleasure dealing with you. :) Regards, Eileen and the team
Iv used Brisbane removalists 4 times and they have been very easy to deal with. The removalists have been very professional and work quickly.
Response from the owner: Thank you for the review Nicholas. I am glad to hear that your moves were successful and that the contact with us was easy. We look forward to future moves. :) Eileen, Thomas and the teams
This is the second time my family has hired this company. I highly recommend them. Eileen and Thomas are incredibly helpful as you discuss your moving needs and the logistics of moving different items to different locations on the same day. And we trust Erick, and his assistant, with our household items. On time, efficient, friendly, hard working, and no breakages even when dealing with a spiral staircase, tricky un/loading spaces, and lifts. Thank you Brisbane Removalists for reducing the stress of moving.
Response from the owner: It is always so lovely to arrive into the office to a happy customer review. Thank you for taking the time to write this. We appreciate this as it is the last thing anyone has time for when moving. We are thrilled that you found our service to your expectations once again Bernadette. We love having repeat clients. Erick is a real trooper and we really value him. He always genuinely goes above and beyond for our clients and always with a smile. I hope you love your new home even if this means we do not get to move you again!!! Eileen, Thomas and the team. :)
More positive feedback after yet another successful engagement with Brisbane Removalists. My experience with them has always been great, but the service we've received on this last job has really been above and beyond.Eileen's assistance leading up to this job, including sending a coordinator to drive by the site ahead of time, was amazing.Sadly, despite all their best endeavours, we still had problems, so it just goes to show that sometimes things just do go wrong. They did everything they could to assist, and even incurred additional costs for which we were not charged. The movers themselves were great, and very careful/mindful while moving things. It was a hard job, given the logistical challenges, but they remained courteous and respectful even when they were clearly exhausted at the end.The same comments apply to their other movers, who attended our previous jobs.
Response from the owner: Hi Nik,Thank you for your lovely review. Yes...so hard when access is difficult. We have a lot of office jobs in the CBD with 20 minute loading zone time constraints, early morning or after hours moving only allowed, or height restrictions that no truck will fit under, so we are used to trying to find solutions to the difficult moves, but it is not always easy. I think a lot of the buildings were built at a time where access was not really thought through - we just have to deal with this. Hopefully, the return will be smoother with a transship. So happy that despite the difficulties, you had a good move. We truly do have wonderful moving teams that are the backbone of our reputation. So glad we could help. See you on the next job Nik. :) Eileen
I used Brisbane removalists twice now, one to move from Newmarket to Chermside, and one from Chermside to Everton Hills. The first time, I needed to move on a short notice. The communication with the team was seamless, especially with Eileen, who gave me a call outside of business hours to explain their services, fee breakdown, etc. The two removalists who showed up, Andre and Murilo, where really organised, detailed, and made sure all furniture were removed with care. For the second time, same deal, great communication, everything organised properly, the removalists (I don't remember their names :( ) showed up precisely at the time agreed and I was completely moved in within 4h.I highly recommend them as everyone I dealt with was highly professional and their fees were decent.
Response from the owner: Thank you Victor for your kind words. We try very hard to make our clients' experience a positive and stress-free one. We appreciate that you take the time to acknowledge that the guys did a great job moving you. I am glad I was able to help you out too. It is always nice to be appreciated. :) We hope that you settle in well in your new home. Eileen and the team. I will share this with Murilo and Andre.
I highly recommend Brisbane Removalists. The team were fantastic, very professional and efficient. I couldn’t believe how quickly everything was done. They took care with my things and were lovely to deal with.
Response from the owner: Hey Rebecca, thank you for taking the time to review us. So happy to see that you were impressed with us and the quality of the service we provide. We do try our best to make your move as seamless as possible with our teams of skilled and efficient superheroes. Erick and team always make the client their priority and go over and above every time - we are lucky to have them and our other superhero teams on board. I will make sure Erick knows you gave them a 5 star. We wish you all the best in your new home Rebecca.
Amazing service as always - we have used the team at Brisbane Removalists many times now - and every time, we couldn't be happier
Response from the owner: Thank you, Kath. Really appreciate that you keep coming back to us. Enjoy your séjour. I will join you for the next one!!! Eileen
If you're looking for down to earth, authentic, service focussed, experienced group of people to either move you or remove rubbish ( this review), you will be pleasantly amazed by Brisbane removalists.Being from Sydney, I had to research who to contact for a quote, to help with a number of things.1. Move us to our apartment2. Remove rubbish at our Mums place3. Help with set up of our new place ( unpack and functional help).I chose Brisbane removalists after reading through all the genuine and real reviews left by customers. And those reviews proved true. From my 1st call with Eileen to organising the services, it had been pleasant and personal. For the rubbish removal I had Andre and Juan. What a great team they made. Fast and at the end they did ask to wash their hands which means very hygiene conscious men. They were polite in taking a simple water offering though appreciated it.For my 1st experience in Brisbane having lived in Sydney most of my life, and not being able to call my best guy Sam ( Newington Removalists), this was a fantastic replacement and on par with who I've known...so look no further in making a decision. You will get the best team for the job.
Response from the owner: Good morning, Linda! What a lovely way to start the day! You have taken a lot of time to write this given your very busy schedule...no wonder you start your day so early! We really appreciate the time you took to write all of this. I will let Andre and Juan know that they were superheroes yet again! We look forward to the next stage in the move and hope you get a lot from our decluttering service with Timea. Sounds like a clean and fresh start to a new home. I am sure you will love the sleepier lifestyle Brisbane offers! Really enjoyed our chats. Talk soon. Eileen and the team.
Very easy and pleasant to deal with from start to finish. Eileen was lovely and communication was fantastic. Camilo L and Dairo were a great team to work with even with our road closed at short notice and the rain. They did not stop until the job was done. Highly recommend and would use Brisbane Removalists again.
Response from the owner: Hi Rachel, thank you for your great review and for your wonderful sense of humour when the roads were blocked off and you only found out last minute. You found a solution and took it all in stride. Shame you did not get an autograph from Mark W., but you still got moved despite the chaos. I am glad it all went well, and I totally loved your attitude in the face of adversity. I am sure the Dairo and Camilo had a lot of fun with you!!! Happy landing in your new place. :) Eileen and the team.
Move was very good, removers were professional and efficient. Admin was very helpful with good communication, process reasonable for our circumstances.
Response from the owner: Good morning, Denice, and thank you for taking time to write us a review. I am glad it went well for you and even happier you found your bed legs. Moving is always hectic, so I hope you get through the last of the boxes soon. Happy landing! Eileen and the team.
Eileen and her team have provided an excellent service. Thank you.
Response from the owner: Hey Jamie, thanks for the review. I will let Erick and Elvis know. We are thrilled we could help out and make it an almost seamless experience for you despite the unexpected delay with getting into the centre. We wish you all the very best with the business. :) Eileen and the team.
The two strapping Colombian lads were punctual. And they didn't mind me jumping in and giving a hand . Well done thanks for making the transition seamless.
Response from the owner: Hi Brad, thanks for the lovely review. I will tell Julian and Jese they have their names in lights. Glad to hear they made your move a wonderful one. We are always happy for clients to help out. Anything to make your move quicker and less costly is fine with us. Enjoy your new home. Eileen and the team.
The team was very helpful, hard working and made our move hassle free
Response from the owner: HI Brad, thank you for your review. Glad your move went well. It was a big job! You must be exhausted. Glad we could get the furniture assembled too. Enjoy your new home when the dust settles, and the boxes have disappeared.
Vanderson and his team worked hard all day on what was a tough job. They were careful, very transparent and committed to getting the job done. There was no damage and the mood stayed positive throughout an 11 hour day. I’d definitely ask for Vanderson again!
Response from the owner: Hi Wayne, thank you for the wonderful review. I will let Vanderson, Robson and Thiago know that they were superheroes! That was a long job, and I am sure you must have been exhausted too! Forewarned was forearmed with your drop off location. Glad we put 3 men on the job. I hope you settle well in your wonderful new home. Eileen, Thomas and the team.
A big shout out to Eileen & her staff Nathan & Joao for all there help with moving me. Extremely professional, very punctual, hard working & a great personality from all. Thanks guys for making my experience stress free. Would highly recommend you to all my friends & family! Thanks legends! 😊
Response from the owner: Thanks Rebecca, for the great review. Loved doing your booking. You made me laugh. It was the best way to end a long day in the office! Loved your attitude to life and knew the team would have a ball moving you. I am sure you made the day stress-free yourself! Enjoy your new home and maybe we will stop our busy lives one day to get that coffee we said we should go for! Happy landing from Eileen and the team.
Moving is a sucky business but Eileen, Marlon and Luis from Brisbane Removalists made the whole thing suck far less than it could have. Nothing was too much trouble, they packed the truck like tetris and they were gentle and thoughtful with everything. I heartily recommend for your next move.
Response from the owner: Thank you, Kathy, we really appreciate your feedback and for taking the time to do this. Sucky is a great way of explaining moving. So glad we made it less sucky! The teams are well trained to do moves so it does make the process easier and allows you to feel confident that your precious items arrive in one piece. We wish you all the very best in your new home Kathy. Hopefully the warm weather will return soon. Eileen
Erick and Elvis helped us with moving from an apartment to a house and they were both great. They took care of our stuff, were friendly, and personable. They both deserve recognition for the hard work that they do and would use them again in the future if needed. :)Thanks!
Response from the owner: Hi Liane, thank you so much for your lovely review. They are truly superstars! I will let them know that you have given them 5 stars! We are happy that your move went so well, and we wish you all the very best in your new home. Eileen, Thomas and the team.
